Ethiopia Gotiti Washed 100% Arabica Speciality Grade Coffee

Gotiti Ethiopian Coffee – Origin, Harvest, and Story

Gotiti coffee originates from Ethiopia, the birthplace of Arabica coffee and a region renowned for its rich coffee heritage. Ethiopian coffee production is shaped by the country’s three main seasons, each playing a crucial role in coffee growth and processing.

The Bega season (October to January) is the long dry period, vital for coffee harvesting and post-harvest processing. The Belg season (February to May) brings the first rains, essential for coffee flowering and the early development of coffee cherries. The Krempt season (June to September) is characterised by heavy rains from the east, supporting the final stages of fruit development and ripening. By late September, rainfall ends abruptly, allowing the cherries to ripen fully and marking the beginning of Ethiopia’s vibrant coffee harvest season in November.

About Ephtah Specialty Coffee

Ephtah Specialty Coffee is dedicated to creating sustainable and transparent coffee supply chains that empower farmers, benefit local communities, and deliver exceptional coffee to customers worldwide. The company places a strong focus on supporting women in coffee, recognising their vital contribution to Ethiopia’s coffee industry and their role in driving positive social and economic change. Ephtah maintains strict quality control throughout every stage of production and export, ensuring that only the finest green coffee beans reach international markets.

Coffee Processing

Gotiti coffee is naturally grown under shade trees, primarily the Ensete (false banana) tree. Only the ripest coffee cherries are selected from nearby smallholder farmers. Cherries are first floated to remove defects, then sun-dried on raised beds for 12 to 15 days. Once dried, the green coffee beans are hand-sorted by local women, ensuring exceptional quality and consistency.

Journey to Export

After processing and drying, the coffee is stored at Moplaco in Gerji, Addis Ababa, before being transported by rail to Djibouti for export to roasters around the world.

Social and Environmental Commitment

Ephtah Specialty Coffee is committed to ethical coffee sourcing and community development. Farmers receive upfront payments upon delivery of their coffee, followed by quality premiums and second payments to ensure fair compensation. The company also supports education through school fee assistance and plans to expand its Ama Commitment Scheme—an initiative aimed at long-term community investment.

Future projects include building a new water tank for coffee flotation, increasing the number of drying beds, and introducing intercropping to support food security and local markets.

Challenges and Future Outlook

In recent years, financial constraints caused by the National Bank of Ethiopia’s inflation control policies have presented challenges. Nevertheless, Ephtah remains fully committed to investing in infrastructure, sustainability, and farmer support, including the expansion of drying facilities and capacity building within local communities.
