This profile brings together lots from rural areas of Buesaco, a traditional coffee-growing municipality in Colombia. The contributing villages include Buesaquito, El Naranjal, Ortega, Veracruz and Santa María. They share similar geography, with altitudes of 1,700 to 2,100 metres, a dry climate and uneven terrain. Lots were selected for their quality. Some producers were harvesting coffee for the first time and exceeded expectations through small-scale pilot experiments, improving the quality of their yields.
The farms benefit from favourable climatic conditions, natural water sources and native forest reserves, which support a diverse range of plants and wildlife. Alongside coffee, they grow crops for household consumption, including bananas, lemons, avocados, yucca, oranges, mandarins, guava and guayaba. Good sunlight supports plant growth and helps produce high-quality coffee beans.
This blend combines lots from several producers, including Ezequiel Gómez, John Gómez, Amelio Santacruz and Melky Chávez. Cherries are picked at optimal ripeness, with only mature fruit selected. Processing includes flotation, manual sorting, disinfection, anaerobic fermentation in tanks and drying by mechanical or solar methods.
About the producers
Amelio Santacruz is from the municipality of Tablón de Gómez and is the first coffee grower in his family. After starting out with cereal and fruit crops, he switched to coffee in 2005, planting traditional varieties such as Colombia and Caturra. In 2014, he began experimenting with varieties including Castillo and Geisha. His farm, El Guayabo, is in Buesaco at an altitude of 1,900 metres. It has sandy loam soil and favourable growing conditions, and uses sustainable farming practices to maintain coffee production.
Melky Chávez is a third-generation coffee producer. He began processing coffee in 2016 to explore ways of improving quality. His farm, El Muro, is in Buesaco at 1,900 metres above sea level, where it grows Castillo and Caturra varieties. The farm’s experience in cultivation and processing has earned several national awards for differentiated coffees.
Pastor Ezequiel Gómez López is from Santa María in Buesaco and is the second generation of coffee growers in his family. He acquired La Esperanza farm in 2020. Located in Villa Moreno at an altitude of 2,100 metres, the farm sits on volcanic soil in the Galeras volcano area. It grows varieties including Bourbon Amarillo, Caturra and Geisha, with a focus on sustainable practices. The farm also has a forest reserve with native tree species.
John Gómez is a third-generation coffee grower who began cultivating coffee in 2008. He acquired Guayacana farm in 2018. At 1,950 metres above sea level, it has fertile soil, plentiful water sources and a favourable microclimate. The farm grows Caturra and Castillo varieties.
Processing
Cherries are harvested at optimal ripeness, and only ripe fruit is selected. Flotation separates lower-quality cherries. Fermentation takes place in tanks and hermetically sealed bags fitted with valves to monitor samples, temperature and pressure. It lasts between 180 and 220 hours, with pH and Brix levels checked every 12 hours. Mechanical drying takes place at temperatures of at least 35°C and can last up to 30 days, depending on the weather.
