Jimma Farmers Multi-purpose Agricultural Cooperative Union (JFMACU)

Jimma Farmers Multi-purpose Agricultural Cooperative Union (JFMACU) is one of Ethiopia’s leading agricultural cooperatives, located in the renowned coffee-growing Jimma Zone of the Oromia Region. Established in 2004 with just 14 primary cooperatives and 7,818 members, JFMACU has grown into a major force within Ethiopia’s coffee industry. Today, the union represents 212 cooperatives and more than 141,146 farmer members, including 28 dedicated coffee-producing cooperatives.

Coffee-Growing Regions and Production

JFMACU operates across some of Ethiopia’s most celebrated coffee-producing districts, including Mana, Kersa, Shebe, Seka Chekorsa and Mencho. As of 2023, the union managed over 11,073 hectares of coffee farmland, producing exceptional speciality coffee sought after by roasters and coffee enthusiasts worldwide.

Coffee is cultivated at high altitudes between 1,800 and 2,200 metres above sea level, creating ideal conditions for slow cherry maturation and enhanced flavour development. Combined with the region’s tropical climate, fertile soils and reliable rainfall, these growing conditions contribute to the distinctive character and premium quality of JFMACU coffees.

High-Quality Washed and Natural Ethiopian Coffee

JFMACU is recognised for producing both washed and natural processed Ethiopian coffees, renowned for their complex flavour profiles, vibrant acidity and exceptional cup quality. The union’s commitment to quality assurance throughout cultivation, harvesting and processing helps ensure consistency and traceability across its coffee supply chain.

Sustainability and Ethical Certifications

Demonstrating a strong commitment to sustainable agriculture and responsible sourcing, JFMACU holds several internationally recognised certifications, including Organic, Rainforest Alliance, Fairtrade and C.A.F.E. Practices. These certifications support environmentally responsible farming methods, fair trading conditions and improved livelihoods for coffee-growing communities.

Global Coffee Exports

JFMACU exports premium Ethiopian coffee to a wide range of international markets. Key export destinations include Europe, the United States, Japan, South Korea, China, Australia, Taiwan and countries across the Middle East. Its reputation for quality, sustainability and reliability has made the union a trusted partner within the global coffee industry.

Community Development and Farmer Support

Beyond coffee production, JFMACU plays a vital role in supporting local communities and improving the welfare of its members. The union invests in a variety of community development initiatives, including the construction of schools and healthcare facilities, access to clean drinking water and educational support programmes.

These projects are designed to enhance living standards, strengthen rural communities and create long-term opportunities for farmers and their families, ensuring that the benefits of coffee production extend beyond the farm gate.
