Located 7 hours drive hours from the city of Padang in the Solok District of West Sumatra this coffee comes from small coffee gardens (0.25ha – 2Ha) which sit in the shadow of the beautiful Kerinci Volcano on the edge of the Kerinci National Park home to the endangered Sumatran Tiger.
The people who inhabit this region are originally from the island of Java and migrated to this region in the 1960s as part of a Government program looking to spread people to available land to farm. There are large Government tea plantations that dominate the landscape and it is only recently that coffee over the past seven years that coffee has been grown here alongside more traditional rice and vegetables. The climate in this area around 1500 masl is perfect for growing coffee and the varietals planted are Lini-s and Caturra.
Camitoran is a village where there are about 250 small-holder farmers spread over 300 Ha of land who deliver coffees to a collector and processor named Irwandi who takes care of the selection and drying for the cherry.
The coffee dries slowly in this region due to the wet humid climate and Irwandi has raised beds for drying his natural coffees inside a parabolic drier. The drying process can take between 20 - 30 days depending on how the climate is.
The Honey Process:
The co-op receives the cherry from the farmers who then do a second picking to remove immatures from here they then wash, float and clean the cherry. The coffee is then pulped leaving as much mucilage on as possible before laying it on raised beds or on tarpaulin on the patio in thin layers to dry for around 10 - 15 days weather depending.
